Fresh produce can be expensive, which can make encouraging your child to eat healthy when you’re on a budget seem difficult. Don’t sweat it. Here are some cheap but healthy after school snack ideas.

Homemade trail mix can be a healthy, affordable option. All you need to do is whip together some Chex mix, nuts, dried fruit, and M&Ms. For additional fiber, you can also add some microwave popcorn. You can get several servings out of this, which makes it an ideal choice.

Hummus is another cheap but healthy after school snack idea. You can make homemade hummus to save extra money, but buying pre-packaged hummus can also be affordable because serving sizes are not huge. It can last throughout the entire week. Pair with carrots and celery or a healthy grain, such as pita bread.

Bread is also reasonably priced and there are a number of things you can do with it. Spread some peanut butter or almond butter on a slice of whole grain bread and top with banana slices or honey. You can also spread with a thin layer of cream cheese and add some jelly.

Another way you can save money is by reusing your dinner leftovers for after school snacks. If you have leftover taco meat, for example, you can throw it over some whole grain tortilla chips and add some low-fat cheese, lettuce or tomatoes if you have any on hand.

While it can seem nerve-wracking to feed your child healthy after school snacks, there are plenty of ways you can without breaking the bank. The key is to use your imagination and make the most of the ingredients that are available to you.
