Here are some sculptures I have made in the past with my kids. As you can see we add color to the white dough just by using markers. My children have found that if you knead the dough enough you can make the whole piece one color.
You can see the different shades of color in many of these pieces we made. I especially love the pastel colors in the automobile with two fat green pigs riding in it.
